Co designing with community & families

Baw Baw, Bass Coast, South Gippsland and Latrobe

The Inner Gippsland Children & Youth Area Partnership is bringing together four teams from Bass Coast, Baw Baw, Latrobe and South Gippsland local government areas to co-design with families, services and communities local solutions.

    Purpose

To co-design solutions to better support our families so they can enable a thriving environment for their children in the first 1000 days from conception to two years of age.

    Intended outcomes

    We are seeking to:

    • deepen our understanding of how we can better support families in those critical  first 1000 days
    • identify the protective factors that support positive wellbeing and development for our children
    • develop and test new ideas, solutions and programs to enable our children to thrive
    • identify models that work and shape future programs
    • develop our local understanding and learnings for better implementation

    Focusing on what matters

    Why the first 1000 days?

The First 1000 Days between a woman’s pregnancy and her child’s second birthday offers a unique window of opportunity to shape a healthier and more prosperous future for the child.

“In recent years, the perceived importance of the First 1000 Days has gained traction as new evidence emerges as to the impact of maternal nutrition on brain development, the neuroscience of infants, the long-term impacts of early childhood experiences such as stress permanently affecting characteristics and the capacity of infants to begin structured learning earlier than previously supposed”

(Arabena, K. 2014, ‘The First 1000 Days: Catalysing equity outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’, Medical Journal of Australia, 200(8):442.).
